Hwa Chong Institution-Yishun Secondary School Cultural Exchange 2006 | 华侨中学-

<DIV align=left>From 6 to 10 March 2006 (Term 1 Week 10 is Hwa Chong Institution's sabbatical week), two Malay Special Program (MSP) students from Hwa Chong Institution (ME from class 2K, Ortus Consortium and LIM SWEE KIAT from class 2L, iSpark Consortium) were attached to Yishun Secondary School for sabbatical course, which is also a Cultural Exchange between the two schools, and the two cultures.</DIV>
<DIV align=left> </DIV>
<DIV align=left>We were exposed to different aspects of the Malay culture, eg. Sepak Takraw, Taman Warisan, Silat, Hantu, Malay literature, etc. Besides, we were also asked to share about the Chinese culture. </DIV>
<DIV align=left> </DIV>
<DIV align=left>Hwa Chong Institution has mainly Chinese students, while Yishun Secondary School has Chinese, Malay and Indian students. It is important to know about other cultures, as Singapore is surrounded by Malay-speaking countries like Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia. To learn a language well, one must understand its culture first. </DIV>
<DIV align=left> </DIV>
<DIV align=left>Some Yishun Secondary School students have asked me why i have chosen Malay as third language. You might be interested to know, too.</DIV>

<DIV align=left>The Singapore Government is setting up another embassy in China, but this time in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, which is my hometown. This means that soon, there will be a lot of communication between the Lion City and the Hibiscus (Brocade) city, and thus it requires people who can speak Malay well to help, like me? haha</DIV></LI>
<LI>
<DIV align=left>I want to be a volunteer for the Beijing 2008 Olympics. China needs people who can speak English well, like me. However, there will surely be Malay-speaking athletes or other officials who do not know English that well. Thus, i can contribute.</DIV></LI>
<LI>
<DIV align=left>I want to be like the late Chinese Prime Minister Zhou En Lai, who could speak 8 languages. Although i can only speak 3 languages now, but i am sure that he can't possible do well for every single language. I must learn all 3 languages well!!!</DIV></LI>
<LI>
<DIV align=left>I am naturally interested to learn about other languages and cultures. This explains why i learn languages very fast.</DIV></LI>

<DIV align=left>I have enjoyed last week's stay with Yishun Sec, very much. One thing i am very happy is that i saw the North brother Luke in Yishun Sec, who said Hi to me on Tuesday. We have y-hope everywhere! Isn't that cool?</DIV>

<DIV align=left>2006年3月6日至10日，两名在华侨中学修读“马来文特别课程”的学生（包括我），来到了义顺中学，参加文化交流活动。这不仅是两校的交流活动， 也是华族与马来族文化的交流活动。</DIV>
<DIV align=left> </DIV>
<DIV align=left>我们在义顺中学短短的一周时间内，我们见识到了马来文化的各个方面，如：马来文学，民间信仰等等。此外，该校学生也同时要求我们介绍中华文化的博大精深。</DIV>
<DIV align=left> </DIV>
<DIV align=left>华侨中学主要是收华族学生，而义顺中学却拥有各个种族的学生。由于新加坡周围都是马来国家，如文莱、马来西亚、印度尼西亚，学习马来文变得越来越重要。而要学好一门语文， 就要先了解它的文化。</DIV>
<DIV align=left> </DIV>
<DIV align=left>一些义顺中学的学生之前询问过我，为什么我选择马来文，而原因如下：</DIV>

<DIV align=left>新加坡政府今年会在我的家乡，中华人民共和国四川省成都市设一个领事馆，这就意味着双方会有很多交流，而我希望在这方面能做出贡献。</DIV></LI>

<DIV align=left>北京2008奥运会就要开幕了。中国不仅需要英语口才好的人才（比如说我），我相信一定会有讲马来语的运动员，甚至官员。他们的英文如果没那么好，那么我就可因帮上忙了。</DIV></LI>

<DIV align=left>我非常羡慕已故的周恩来总理，除了他为人民作了很多好事，他还会讲八国语言哩！</DIV></LI>

<DIV align=left>我本来就喜欢学语言，这就是为什么我学语言学的这么快啦。</DIV></LI></OL>
